JOZEF STEFAN INSTITUTE

JSI, Slovenia

Lead: Tomaž Tomše, PhD

JSI brings knowledge on permanent magnets based on rare-earths and transition metals. It participated in several FP7 and H2020 Projects, coordinating some of them. As a member of the Center for Electron Microscopy and having access to highly qualified professionals in the field, JSI is fully equipped for the preparation and characterization of all types of magnetic materials. JSI is responsible for project management, preparation and processing of Nd-Fe-B magnet waste, development of the rapid radiation-assisted sintering (RAS) approach, and material characterization (microstructural and magnetic analyses.

KOÇ UNIVERSITY

KU, Turkey

Lead: Uğur Ünal, PhD

KU is one of the leading Universities in Turkey and is active in materials syntheses and analyses. Among KU’s expertise are metallic and ceramic thin films, magnetron sputtering, high-entropy alloys, hardfacing alloys, surface characterization methods, mechanical properties of coatings, and tribology. KU is responsible for coating of the powders through physical vapor deposition method, densification kinetics study on the coated powders via SPS, and carrying out advanced material characterizations, such as XRF, XRD, XPS, and SEM.

KU LEUVEN

KUL, Belgium

Lead: Kim Vanmeensel, PhD

KUL brings extensive experience and know-how on multiphysics finite element simulations of sintering processes, including the spark-plasma sintering technology that is employed in the project as a pressureless, rapid consolidation technology to liquid phase sinter Nd-Fe-B-type systems. It covers the development of computational thermodynamics tools and methodologies, including thermodynamic and kinetic database development of new alloy compositions. Additionally, KUL has extensive expertise on recycling secondary material streams following pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and solvometallurgical routes, which will contribute to the LCC and LCA studies performed in the scope of the project.

IVL SWEDISH ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

IVL, Sweden

Lead: Christian Junestedt

IVL is a non-profit organization established by the Swedish government and Swedish industry. IVL performs applied research for an ecologically, economically, and socially sustainable growth within the corporate world and society at large. When it comes to performing Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) on products and processes, IVL has extensive and long-standing experience. IVL leads the LCC and LCA evaluation of the project, with the help of all other partners.

MAGNETI LJUBLJANA D.D.

MGI, Slovenija

Lead: Matej Zaplotnik

MGI is a manufacturer of rare-earth permanent magnets (Nd-Fe-B and Sm-Co) and alnico magnets. Products from Magneti are mostly used in the automotive sector, with companies like Continental, Bosch, and Wabco as clients. Magneti has a strong and well experienced research group making continuous research and development on the material-quality as well as technology improvements. As an associated partner, MGI will provide Nd-Fe-B production waste in various state of corrosion that will be used as starting materials for the project’s reprocessing investigations.
